March is Eye Donor Awareness Month

The month of March is a special time to honor eye donors and their families for giving the gift of sight. Eye donations are crucial for research and education, as well as corneal transplants that can help restore the sight of children and adults.

Lions Eye Banks recover, evaluate, store and distribute human eye tissue for sight-saving procedures. Lions support more than 60 eye banks in nine countries. Recognize Eye Donor Awareness Month by contacting your local eye bank to raise awareness in your community about the importance of eye donations.

Lillington Lion Club Member Ken Smith to seek the office of 1st VDG

Fellow Lions

It is hard to believe that half of this Lions Year is over. District Governor Randy, 1st VDG Vince, and 2nd VDG Ken have been working hard for all the Lions in 31F and across the state. As a District, we have continued to live up to our motto, “WE SERVE.” We are looking forward to the rest of the year.

As Nominations Chair, I am proud to announce that we have a full slate of officers for 2013-2014.
1st VDG Vince Schimmoller is our nominee for District Governor
2nd VDG Ken Smith is our nominee for 1st VDG
Lion R. Lynn McCaskill of the Ellerbe Lions Club is the nominee as 2nd VDG

Lion Lynn has been a member of the Ellerbe Lions Club for close to 40 years. He served as District Secretary and Treasurer for PDG GB Lamm and has served his Club in a number of positions. He is a great Lion and will be an asset for the District. Lion Lynn is owner and pharmacist at Ellerbe Pharmacy.

According to 31-F Constitution and By-Laws if the current 1st VDG is nominated for office of DG and the current 2nd VDG is nominated for office of 1st VDG, no other nomination will be accepted.

All candidates for the office of 2nd VDG must file their intention at least one day prior to the 31-F convention. Only those qualified candidates’ names will be placed in nomination.

Each Club can have one (1) voting delegate per each ten (10) members based on the December 31, 2012 membership.

In Service,

PDG Jerry Lee Thomas
Nominations Chair

Protect the Work of Nonprofits – Make 2 Urgent Phone Calls Today

News media are reporting that the President Barack Obama and House Speaker John Boehner are seriously considering imposing new limits on the charitable giving incentive as part of a package to avert the “fiscal cliff.” Unless they hear a huge groundswell of opposition immediately, the ability of charitable nonprofits – everything from churches and synagogues to local food banks, cultural groups, Girl Scouts, and United Ways – to raise the funds they need to serve others may be sharply curbed for many years to come. The Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University estimates that this proposal would take away $2.43 billion a year from nonprofits.

THE MOST IMPORTANT THINGS YOU CAN DO:
Call the White House (202-456-1111) and the Speaker (202-225-0600) RIGHT NOW and give the operator this message:
The 28% limit on charitable deductions hurts front-line charities serving people in need. Don’t hurt the helpers. Don’t limit charitable deductions!
Give your name, city, and state, and tell what the charitable deduction means to the work you do or the services you rely on.
Also send Tweets to @WhiteHouse and @SpeakerBoehner telling them not to limit charitable deductions. Consider this sample Tweet: @WhiteHouse @SpeakerBoehner – Capping charitable deductions hurts communities. Say no to 28% limit! #protectgiving

THE NEXT MOST IMPORTANT THING YOU CAN DO:
Send this information to everyone you know who cares about the work of your nonprofit, the services you provide, and the people you serve. That means all of your co-workers, board members, volunteers, clients, people served, and colleagues with other nonprofits in your community. The White House Comment Line operates from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Call now and forward this message. If the lines are busy, please keep trying. Go to http://www.ncnonprofits.org or http://www.GiveVoice.org for more information about the threat to the charitable giving incentive and what you can do.
