Lions Eye Banks recover, evaluate, store and distribute human eye tissue for sight-saving procedures. Lions support more than 60 eye banks in nine countries. Recognize Eye Donor Awareness Month by contacting your local eye bank to raise awareness in your community about the importance of eye donations.

March 16th: CFCA Hosts Corn Hole Tournament
Cape Fear Christian Academy will host a Corn Hole Tournament on this date from 11:00 am-4:00 pm. Registration is $30.00 and concessions are available all day including homemade BBQ! March 23rd: Lillington Easter Egg Hunt
This event, which is open to the public, will be held on Saturday, March 23rd from 12:00 pm until 3:00 pm at the Lillington Park and will include special activities and attractions for children. The Egg Hunt will be hosted by the Lillington Parks and Recreation Department, the Chamber, and other local agencies. On December 20th the Lumberton Lions Club presented two Jack Stickley Fellowships Awards. Since 1989, the Lumberton Lions Club has given 34 Jack Stickley Fellowship Awards.

It is hard to believe that half of this Lions Year is over. District Governor Randy, 1st VDG Vince, and 2nd VDG Ken have been working hard for all the Lions in 31F and across the state. As a District, we have continued to live up to our motto, “WE SERVE.” We are looking forward to the rest of the year.

As Nominations Chair, I am proud to announce that we have a full slate of officers for 2013-2014.
1st VDG Vince Schimmoller is our nominee for District Governor
2nd VDG Ken Smith is our nominee for 1st VDG
Lion R. Lynn McCaskill of the Ellerbe Lions Club is the nominee as 2nd VDG

Lion Lynn has been a member of the Ellerbe Lions Club for close to 40 years. He served as District Secretary and Treasurer for PDG GB Lamm and has served his Club in a number of positions. He is a great Lion and will be an asset for the District. Lion Lynn is owner and pharmacist at Ellerbe Pharmacy.

According to 31-F Constitution and By-Laws if the current 1st VDG is nominated for office of DG and the current 2nd VDG is nominated for office of 1st VDG, no other nomination will be accepted.

All candidates for the office of 2nd VDG must file their intention at least one day prior to the 31-F convention. Only those qualified candidates’ names will be placed in nomination.

Each Club can have one (1) voting delegate per each ten (10) members based on the December 31, 2012 membership.

On Friday, December 14th, 2012 tragedy struck the quiet city of Newtown, CT. At approximately 9:30am, school children and staff at Sandy Hook Elementary School were just starting their day. Students were studying math, others their social studies, and perhaps the younger children were learning their alphabet or visiting the school library. It was, in every way, an ordinary day. And then – the unthinkable happened. A gunman broke into the school, murdering twenty-six people, including 20 children, none older than 7, their principal and several teachers. The perpetrator then turned a gun on himself, ending the nightmare which had unfolded only moments before, and ending too a life of promise for so many.

As former teachers, and as parents and grandparents, Linda and I are struggling to come to grips with such an event, and I know all of you are as well. And like you, our thoughts and prayers are with the families who lost their loved ones, and the community that is left to wonder “why?”

We may never know why this happened, and the community of Newtown is left to pick up the pieces and try to put their lives back together and make sense of a senseless act.

There are 46,000 Lions clubs all over the world – many in communities no larger than Newtown, CT. Each and every Lions club is part of the fabric of their respective community. Neighbor helping neighbor. A shoulder to cry on when grief strikes. A helping hand in time of need.

In the immediate aftermath of the shootings, as Newtown and the world was just learning of the tragedy, as sirens were wailing with police and ambulances rushing to the scene, the Newtown Lions club wanted to help. They quickly set up coffee and refreshments for first responders so they could in turn concentrate on their jobs. Trivial in an atmosphere of unspeakable grief, yet a perfect example of an unselfish act of kindness and concern, and the very definition of our motto “We Serve.”

Thank you to the members of the Newtown Lions club. Please know that Lions around the world are with you in heart and spirit, and that we will do what we can in the immediate future to provide you what assistance you may need.
